AAV Congress in Kansas City
J. Hooimeijer recently attended the AAV Congress in Kansas City. This conference was very special and wonderful in many ways. Jan gave the masterclass on "Behavior-Intelligence-Cognitive Abilities of Parrots and Preventing Welfare Problems" together with Dr. Irene Pepperberg. This masterclass was received extremely positively.
Thanks to the collaboration with the president of the AAV, Stephanie Lamb and Harrison's Bird Foods, the book 'Caring for Parrot's' was also offered free of charge to all participants of the conference. The book was written by Drs. Jan Hooimeijer about the importance of the prevention of health problems, behavioral problems and welfare problems.
If you know how to prevent problems, you also know what to do to solve them.
Of course, there was also plenty of time to catch up with colleagues and discuss important topics in avian medicine. Together with Greg Harrison, Jan was invited by Stephanie Lamb, among others, for a discussion about the problems of nutrition and nutritional errors/deficiencies. The conclusion was that this issue is not sufficiently on the agenda of the AAV.
It is important that (avian) veterinarians learn how to diagnose “malnutrition/feeding errors” on the basis of a good questionnaire and thorough clinical examination. Preferably to give good advice at an early stage and from within the field.
It was discussed that more attention should be paid to prevention during the next conference. Extremely positive because the prevention of health and welfare problems has hardly received the attention it needs over the past 10-15 years.
